A search engine, such as Google, is an online tool that helps users of the World Wide Web find the sites
and information they're looking for. Most search engines use automated programs (sometimes called
spiders) to look for relevant information based on keywords entered by the user, and search not only
web sites' content but also their web addresses, number of pages, and links. Search engines are one
of the top ways users can find your web site or online store.

First you must ask yourself, what is your target audience?  Do you need to be ranked high in the Search
Engines?  Web designers need to know this so that they can add what is needed in your source code to
help rank your site highly.  If you are not concerned with finding customers through the Internet, then you
shouldn't be concerned with Search Engines.
Paying  a Company for Site Optimization

There are hundreds of millions of websites so don't be fooled into thinking that if you pay someone to have
your site optimized, your website will appear high in the search engine rankings.

The process by which search engines index sites changes almost every month, too.  What worked a few
months ago may not work today.

But there are basic things that determine where your site will appear in search engine rankings.

How often your site is changed

Update your site on a regular basis and you'll keep people coming back for more.  New and updated
website content will also improve your site's ranking on many of the top search engines.

Size of site

The larger the better!  When your site is scanned if there are several pages with links to each other, your
site will be interpreted to be of higher value and importance than those with only a page or two.

Quality and content

Say something!  This may seem obvious, but a site that looks professional and offers a good experience
for visitors will get more traffic, more referrals, and, in the end, higher rankings.

Number of competitors sites

If you have thousands of competitors, you chances of getting a high ranking is very low.  If you only have a
few businesses that provide the same service or product that you do, you should see your website high in
the rankings.

Adding the right things in your source code for your web pages

Your Web site designer/developer should understand what is needed to added to your web pages through
Meta tags and other ways.  Using good keywords is a must.  There are other things that should be done,
but I can't give away all my secrets here!

Having a Site Map on your website

If your site is big enough to warrant having a site map, this is helpful to the search engines to link all of your
pages together.

Number of links to your site from other sites

I can't emphasize this enough!  Get links!  When the spiders crawl the Internet and look at the pages, if they
see links from other sites to yours, they conclude that your site is of value to users and therefore, rank it
higher.

Submit your site to search engines on a regular basis.

Even though Google and Yahoo say its not necessary, it wouldn't hurt.  You can do this yourself, or pay a
company to do it for you.  If you want to be ranked by more than just  the top few search engines, this would
probably be the best thing for you to do.
